My products are fort the impatient, lazy person…

or so I often tell my customers, and I include myself in that category. It sound harsh, so I suppose what I mean is that my products are for people who are spontaneous, want something right now and don’t have the time or energy to plan ahead. So my version of bircher muesli came about simply because I didn’t feel like muesli with milk, I felt like something different for breakfast but hadn’t planned ahead. So I bodgied up this dish. It can be consumed instantly or in a few minutes time during which you can make your tea or coffee, find your cutlery and toppings (optional) or check your phone, if that’s what you like to do before brekkie. These days I even make it at night when I have a market to go to the next day. I just make it in a jar, put it in my esky and eat it at the market when I get the chance. There are only so many pies, croissants and gozleme I can eat for breakfast at a market before I really need a change.

This dish is so simple that I feel slightly fraudulent even calling it a “recipe” but I’ll set it out that way for the sake of consistency. As I already mentioned, it came about from a necessity of sorts, created from what I already had in my kitchen: muesli, yoghurt, hot water and, of course, Sangria Syrup. I eat it often these days and sometimes add more interesting toppings if I have them at hand. Otherwise, when I’m feeling lazy (there’s that word again), I add nothing. Sometimes I feel like a thinner mix so I add more boiling water or more yoghurt or both. Sometimes I like it a little firmer. I just make it up as I go along, according to my mood. Anyway, here’s the recipe. See what you think.

Cheat’s Sangria Syrup Bircher Muesli

Ingredients:

  • One part muesli – I use ½ cup Pure Harvest organic muesli, but use whatever you have or like
  • One part boiling water
  • One part yoghurt – I use Jalna Biodynamic yoghurt
  • Glüh-Brew’s Sangria syrup – I use upwards of 2 teaspoons per ½ cup muesli, depending on my mood
  • Optional toppings: sliced banana, grated apple, berries, chopped walnuts, ground flaxseed, any fresh fruit you like or have at hand.

Method:

Add boiling water to muesli. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or longer if you like. It just softens the muesli a little more if you wait a bit.

Mix in the yoghurt.  If you don’t want to wait, you can just mix the water, muesli and yoghurt together all at once.

Stir in your Glüh-Brew Sangria Syrup until you like the level of flavour. I think you definitely need at least 2 teaspoons in a ½ cup serve of muesli. The idea is that the Sangria Syrup is giving you the flavour that you might otherwise gain from soaking oats in apple juice overnight. After all, there’s apple juice in our Sangria Syrup 😊

Add toppings. Enjoy!

Note: If you are actually planning ahead and leave the mix a fair bit longer (overnight, for example) it will thicken up and you may need to add a little more water, yoghurt or Sangria Syrup to loosen it up if you prefer a looser texture. Bear in mind that adding water will dilute the flavour a little, adding yoghurt will make it creamier and adding Sangria Syrup will make it sweeter.
